The cast is supportive rather than curative on its own. Its purpose, shape, and duration depend on the diagnosis, examination findings, swelling, and follow-up plan.

Follow the instructions about elevation, walking, lifting, and exercise. Keep the cast dry and clean, and use only the prescribed way to protect it during bathing. Move free digits gently if advised, and inspect the edges for rubbing. Do not insert objects, apply heat, or remove the cast without the treating team. Attend reviews so the position and fit can be checked.

Seek prompt medical advice for increasing pressure or pain, pins and needles, numbness, cold or discoloured fingers or toes, or difficulty moving them. A cast that becomes wet, cracked, loose, or painfully tight needs review. Contact the service for skin breakdown, drainage, fever, or a new smell from beneath the cast.
