What should you know about plaster of paris products?

The product is usually a dry mineral powder held in gauze or bandage layers. Different formats allow a clinician to build a rigid cast, reinforce a particular area, or create a removable-support stage while swelling settles. Padding protects the skin, and the material is shaped to support the injured or corrected position.

The choice depends on the body region, the required stability, swelling, skin condition, and whether the cast is for a fracture or a planned series of corrections. A product name on its own does not show whether walking, exercise, or removal is appropriate.

Let the treating team finish and check the cast before using the limb. Keep it dry, avoid squeezing soft areas while it sets, and rest the limb in the position advised. Move uncovered fingers or toes if instructed, but do not force movement through pain. Never cut, reshape, loosen, or pad the inside yourself. Use crutches or other aids exactly as demonstrated.

Ask for urgent assessment when severe or escalating pain is joined by tightness, numbness, tingling, coldness, colour change, or reduced movement in exposed digits. Contact the clinic for a cracked, loose, wet, foul-smelling, or sharply rubbing cast. New drainage, fever, or swelling that does not improve with elevation should not be managed by altering the product at home.

Ask which product was used and why, how long it should remain in place, whether it can get wet, and what activity limits apply. Ask how swelling will be checked and how to arrange a replacement if the cast becomes damaged.
