What should you know about plaster of paris pop?

POP is the common clinical shorthand for plaster of Paris. It is supplied dry and becomes pliable when moistened. A clinician wraps it over padding and shapes it while it sets, creating a support that restricts unwanted movement. The design may be a full cast, a partial cast, or a temporary splint when swelling is expected.

POP can be used in fracture casting and in serial casts for conditions such as clubfoot. It is different from the diagnosis or treatment plan itself: it is one material used to hold a body part in a chosen position.

Keep the cast clean and dry, support it with the palm rather than the fingertips while it is setting, and elevate the limb when swelling is present. Keep exposed joints and digits moving as instructed. Do not alter the cast, place powder or objects inside it, or bear weight until the clinician says that this is safe. Check the skin at the edges for rubbing.

Get prompt advice if pain is increasing instead of settling, the cast feels tight, or fingers or toes become numb, cold, pale, blue, or difficult to move. A soaked, broken, loose, foul-smelling, or rubbing cast may no longer support the limb properly and should be reviewed. Fever, drainage, or a new pressure area also warrants contact with the care team.
