What should you know about plaster of paris orthopedic cast?

The cast is built over padding and moulded to the shape of the limb. After it hardens, it helps maintain alignment and reduces unwanted movement. It may be used for fracture care, after a procedure, or during a staged orthopaedic correction. A cast does not repair tissue by itself; it creates a stable environment while the treatment plan takes effect.

Your clinician may leave space for swelling or use a partial cast at first. As swelling changes, the cast may need assessment, adjustment, or replacement. The prescribed position and weight-bearing limit are specific to your injury.

Keep the cast clean and dry, protect it during bathing, and never insert pens, sticks, or powders underneath it. Rest and elevate the limb as advised, and exercise free joints only within the instructions you received. Do not drive, walk, lift, or return to sport until your clinician has explained what is safe. Attend planned checks even if the cast feels comfortable.

Contact your care team promptly if pain is worsening rather than settling, the cast feels tight, or the skin burns or rubs in one place. Urgent assessment is needed for new numbness or tingling, inability to move fingers or toes, unusual paleness or blue colour, coldness, rapidly increasing swelling, or a cast that is broken, soaked, or slipping.

Ask what the cast is stabilising, how much movement and weight are allowed, how to manage bathing and sleep, and when it will be reviewed or removed. Confirm who to contact outside clinic hours if pressure, colour, sensation, or movement changes.
