What should you know about plaster of paris mold?

A clinician wets plaster bandage, places it over protective padding, and contours it to the limb or joint. The material starts flexible, allowing the position and fit to be adjusted before it firms. Once hard, the mould helps hold the treated area still. Depending on the injury or treatment plan, it may be a full cast or a partial splint that leaves room for swelling.

The fit matters. A mould should support the intended area without pressing sharply on skin or restricting circulation. Swelling can change the way it feels after application, so early checks and clear instructions are part of safe cast care.

Keep the mould supported and dry while it hardens. Avoid resting its wet surface on a hard edge or placing weight through it until your clinician says it is ready. After it sets, do not reshape, loosen, or pad it yourself. Elevate the limb when advised, keep exposed fingers or toes moving gently if permitted, and follow instructions for walking, bathing, and follow-up visits.

Call the treating service if the mould becomes loose, cracked, wet inside, or painful at one particular spot. Get urgent assessment for worsening pain, marked swelling, new tingling or numbness, cold or discoloured fingers or toes, or difficulty moving them. A cast that feels suddenly tighter can need an examination, especially when swelling is increasing.

Ask how long the mould needs to remain undisturbed, which activities are allowed, how to protect it during washing, and when the fit will be reviewed. Ask how you can tell normal settling from pressure on the skin or circulation.
