What should you know about plaster of paris for home?

Plaster of Paris is a fine powder that sets into a hard gypsum material when water is added. It can be useful for moulds, ornaments, small surface repairs, and classroom projects. The setting mixture can warm as it hardens, and dust can irritate the eyes, throat, or lungs. A solid-looking result may still be weak if the mix, support, or drying conditions are unsuitable.

A home project is different from a clinical cast. Medical teams shape casts around swelling, circulation, movement, and skin protection. Household plaster must not be wrapped around an arm, leg, finger, or any other body part.

Read the packet before starting. Work in a ventilated area, keep the powder away from your face, wear eye protection and gloves, and use a clean container. Add powder and water in the stated order, mix without splashing, and use only the amount needed. Keep the material dry and sealed between uses; damp powder may set in the package.
