What should you know about plaster of paris for a broken arm?

After an arm injury is assessed and aligned when needed, a clinician may apply padded plaster layers around part of the arm or the whole arm. As the material sets, it forms a firm support that limits unwanted movement. The exact design depends on the injury, swelling, and which joints need protection.

Pain and swelling can change during the early healing period. The cast should feel supportive, not increasingly constricting. Keep the arm elevated as instructed and check that exposed fingers remain warm, normally coloured, and movable.
