Can placental abruption cause a mother’s death?

The placenta supplies oxygen and nourishment to the baby. When it pulls away before birth, blood can collect behind it or leave through the vagina. A severe separation may cause heavy blood loss, pain, contractions, or changes in the baby’s heart rate. The mother may become pale, weak, dizzy, breathless, confused, or faint. Rapid hospital treatment is used to protect both patients and to control bleeding.

If abruption is suspected, call emergency services or go to the maternity unit immediately. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or unwell. Keep track of bleeding, pain, fluid loss, and fetal movement if this does not delay help. In hospital, clinicians may check vital signs, blood tests, the baby’s heart rate, and ultrasound findings. Birth may be recommended when bleeding or fetal distress makes continuing the pregnancy unsafe; this can include a Caesarean Section.

Seek emergency help for vaginal bleeding in pregnancy, sudden or constant abdominal pain, a hard or tender uterus, repeated contractions, reduced fetal movement, dizziness, fainting, or trouble breathing. Bleeding can be absent even when an abruption is serious, so severe pain or feeling suddenly unwell also warrants immediate assessment.
