Placenta accreta symptoms

Placenta accreta is often suspected during an ultrasound rather than discovered from a specific symptom. The placenta may attach deeply to the womb, and the pregnancy can otherwise feel ordinary. Vaginal bleeding, especially later in pregnancy, can occur when the placenta is low or close to the cervix, but bleeding does not identify the cause by itself.

Abdominal or pelvic discomfort, contractions, or pressure can have many explanations. A symptom does not establish the condition. Diagnosis depends on maternity assessment, scan appearance, and the full pregnancy history.

Contact your maternity unit promptly if you notice any vaginal bleeding, even if it is light or stops. Use the advice given by your team about activity, examinations, and follow-up scans. Tell them about previous Caesarean Section or womb surgery, the baby's movements, pain pattern, and whether fluid has leaked.

Call emergency services or go to urgent maternity care for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe or constant abdominal pain, regular contractions, breathlessness, chest pain, or reduced fetal movement. Do not drive yourself if you feel weak or dizzy. Bring your maternity records if they are within reach, but do not delay leaving to find them.

Ask what the scan shows about placental position and attachment, whether you need repeat imaging, and which symptoms should trigger immediate attendance. Ask how delivery would be organised and whether Hysterectomy could be needed if bleeding cannot be controlled.
