Placenta accreta prognosis

The placenta may grow into the womb wall instead of separating normally after the baby is born. This can cause severe bleeding and may require a planned birth in a hospital with obstetric, anaesthetic, blood-bank, and surgical support. The care team considers scan findings, previous uterine surgery, the baby's development, and your general health when discussing timing and delivery planning.

Some people need removal of the womb after birth, known as a hysterectomy. Recovery then includes healing from major surgery, emotional support, and discussion of the effect on future pregnancy. A planned approach can help the team prepare equipment, specialists, and blood products, although unexpected bleeding can still occur.

Keep appointments with your maternity team and bring a written list of medicines, allergies, previous operations, and questions. During pregnancy, contact your maternity unit urgently for vaginal bleeding, persistent abdominal pain, contractions, leaking fluid, faintness, or reduced fetal movement. After birth or surgery, seek immediate help for soaking-heavy bleeding, worsening dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, severe pain, or a wound that is opening or becoming increasingly red.

Ask how deep the placenta appears to attach, whether nearby organs may be involved, where delivery is safest, and which specialists will attend. You can also ask how a hysterectomy would affect recovery, fertility, breastfeeding, and emotional wellbeing.
