Pizza food poisoning signs: what to know

Symptoms may begin after eating contaminated ingredients, undercooked toppings or food kept at an unsafe temperature. Cramping, loose stools, nausea, vomiting and fever are common features of Food Poisoning, but the timing is not proof that pizza was the cause. Other people who ate the same food becoming ill can be a useful clue. A food intolerance or another infection can produce similar symptoms. Note when the meal was eaten, when symptoms began, and whether there is blood in the stool or vomit.

Take frequent small sips of water or Oral Rehydration Therapy solution, especially after vomiting or diarrhoea. Rest and return to simple foods as tolerated. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Keep the packaging, receipt or leftover food safely stored if a clinician or local authority needs details; do not taste food you suspect is contaminated. Children, older adults, pregnant people and those with chronic illness may need advice sooner.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening Abdominal Pain, repeated vomiting that prevents fluids, bloody diarrhoea, confusion, fainting, very little urine, or a high or persistent Fever. Emergency assessment is needed for severe dehydration or breathing difficulty. If fluids cannot be kept down, IV Fluid Therapy may be considered by a medical team.
