What should you know about pityriasis versicolor on arms?

Arm lesions may be scattered, joined into larger areas, or more visible after time outdoors because surrounding skin tans differently. Their surface can feel slightly dry or powdery rather than swollen. Pityriasis versicolor is caused by increased activity of a yeast that normally lives on skin; it is not a sign that the arms are dirty.

The appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. A clinician may compare both arms and examine nearby skin for the same pattern. Dark patches, white patches and other forms of skin rash can have different causes and need different care.

A topical antifungal is often used on affected arm skin, while a medicated shampoo treatment may be prescribed as a body wash when several areas are involved. Follow the product directions carefully, including contact time and the area to cover. Oral antifungal treatment is reserved for selected situations and needs medical guidance because tablets can interact with other medicines.

Wash gently, dry the arms thoroughly and change damp sleeves after exercise. Avoid scrubbing the patches or applying strong lightening products. Take a clear photograph in similar lighting before treatment so you can compare texture and spread without mistaking slow colour recovery for ongoing infection.

Seek assessment if arm patches are rapidly changing, very itchy, tender, blistered, bleeding or infected-looking, or if they appear with fever or facial swelling. Book a review when the scale persists after treatment or when the colour pattern does not fit this condition. A clinician can check for alternatives before you repeat antifungal products.
