Pityriasis versicolor fungus and white facial spots

Pityriasis versicolor is linked to overgrowth of Malassezia, a yeast found naturally on the skin. The affected areas may be lighter than surrounding skin, but some people develop tan, pink, or darker patches instead. The face can be involved, and the patches may become easier to see after sun exposure because nearby skin tans. A little scale may appear when the area is gently rubbed. White patches on skin also occur with other conditions, so a clinician may need to check the pattern and surface carefully.

For facial involvement, a clinician commonly chooses a topical antifungal treatment that is appropriate for delicate skin. Use it as directed rather than applying stronger products or household remedies. Do not place antifungal products near the eyes unless the instructions specifically allow it. A medicated shampoo treatment can sometimes be part of a wider plan, while oral antifungal treatment is considered only after a clinical review. Keep the skin cool and dry where possible, use gentle non-irritating skincare, and protect the face from sun so colour differences are less conspicuous.

Book a dermatology review when pale spots are new, multiplying, sharply white, smooth without scale, or associated with hair colour change, pain, or significant inflammation. Seek prompt help for swelling around the eyes, painful blisters, or a rapidly worsening facial eruption. Lack of improvement after the advised course also deserves reassessment because a different diagnosis or treatment may be needed.
