Pityriasis rosea treatment: what to know

Pityriasis rosea often starts with a single larger scaly patch, then develops into smaller oval patches that may follow the skin lines on the trunk. It can itch, especially with heat, sweating, or friction. The condition is generally self-limited, but several other rashes can look similar. Diagnosis is based on the history and examination; unusual distribution, severe symptoms, or uncertainty may call for additional testing.

Apply a bland fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, especially after a lukewarm shower. Emollient therapy helps reduce dryness and friction against the outer skin. Wear soft breathable clothing, keep the room cool, and avoid scratching, harsh soaps, and fragranced products. A clinician or pharmacist may suggest an anti-itch medicine or a short course of an anti-inflammatory cream when appropriate for your age, skin site, and medical history. Use any prescribed product exactly as directed and stop if it causes marked burning, swelling, or worsening redness.

Arrange a review if itching prevents sleep, the rash is painful, the skin becomes crusted or oozes, or the pattern continues to spread in an unfamiliar way. Seek urgent help for blistering, skin peeling, swelling of the lips or face, breathing trouble, or painful sores in the mouth or eyes. A new rash during pregnancy deserves medical advice, particularly if it is accompanied by fever or a change in general wellbeing.
