Pityriasis Alba Symptoms

A patch can be lighter than nearby skin without being completely white. Its border is often indistinct, and the surface may feel slightly rough. Some people notice mild itch, while others have no sensation at all. The cheeks, area around the mouth, chin, and arms are common sites. Colour contrast may increase after sun exposure. Symptoms alone cannot confirm the condition: a clinician considers the shape, scale, distribution, progression, and any history of eczema or product irritation.

Wash gently, avoid exfoliating brushes, and apply a fragrance-free emollient to damp skin. Reapply during the day if tightness or flaking returns. Protect the face and arms from sun so surrounding skin does not tan more deeply. Do not scratch or use steroid creams left over from another rash. If itch, redness, or scale is persistent, a clinician can decide whether a topical corticosteroid is suitable and explain safe facial use.

Arrange an appointment if patches are painful, very itchy, rapidly spreading, swollen, blistered, wet, or crusted. Have sharply white areas assessed, especially if hairs within them lose colour or new areas continue to appear. A review is worthwhile whenever the pattern is unclear or the skin change is affecting confidence, because several conditions can resemble pale patches.
