Pityriasis Alba and Sun Exposure

Pityriasis alba patches have reduced colour compared with surrounding skin, and the difference may stand out after outdoor activity or holidays. Sunlight can also dry or irritate sensitive skin, making fine scale easier to see. The patches are not caused by dirt and do not become contagious in the sun. A pale patch that is sharply white, expanding, or changing in texture may have another cause, so its pattern should be assessed rather than judged by colour alone.

Use shade, clothing, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin, renewing it according to the product directions and after swimming. Apply a fragrance-free emollient after bathing and whenever the skin feels dry. Avoid tanning the surrounding skin deliberately to disguise the patches; this increases contrast and adds sun damage. If redness or itch continues despite gentle care, a clinician may recommend a short, carefully directed topical corticosteroid course.

Ask for an examination if a patch changes quickly after sun exposure, burns, blisters, bleeds, or develops a persistent rough area. Review is also appropriate when colour loss is sharply demarcated, affects the lips or hair, or appears in several new sites. Sun protection remains useful while the diagnosis is being clarified.
