Pitting oedema in pregnancy: what to know

Pitting oedema means pressing swollen skin leaves a dent that gradually fills in. Pregnancy can increase fluid in the tissues, and pressure from the growing womb can slow blood return from the legs. Swelling is often more noticeable around the ankles after standing or later in the day. Swelling of the face or hands, a sudden change, or swelling with headache or visual symptoms is more concerning. Tell your midwife or obstetrician about new pitting swelling so your blood pressure and urine can be checked. Rest with your legs supported, avoid standing still for long periods, and keep gently mobile as advised. Comfortable shoes and non-restrictive clothing may help. Drink normally and do not take water tablets, supplements, or herbal remedies for swelling without medical guidance. Compare both legs and note whether the change is gradual or sudden.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for sudden swelling of the face or hands, a severe headache, flashing lights or blurred vision, pain beneath the ribs, marked nausea, or feeling very unwell. One-sided leg swelling with pain, warmth, or redness needs prompt assessment. Chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, collapse, or severe symptoms require emergency help.
