Pins and needles in the palm of the hand

Pressure at the wrist can affect sensation in the palm, especially after sleeping on the hand, using vibrating equipment, or holding a phone or steering wheel for a long time. Tingling with thumb, index, and middle-finger symptoms can fit median-nerve irritation; ring- and little-finger symptoms can fit ulnar-nerve irritation.

Symptoms in both hands, or tingling that also affects the feet, may occur with Peripheral Neuropathy. A clinician may consider Type 2 Diabetes, Vitamin B12 Deficiency, or Hypothyroidism alongside nerve compression. The palm location is a clue, not a diagnosis.

Change the activity that provokes the sensation, loosen your grip, and keep the wrist straight rather than bent for long periods. Move the fingers gently and check the skin for burns or pressure marks if sensation is reduced. Avoid tight jewellery, bandages, or splints unless a professional recommends them.

Book a primary-care appointment if the feeling keeps returning, lasts after rest, wakes you repeatedly, or causes weakness, clumsiness, or pain. Bring a record of activities, positions, affected fingers, and how quickly the sensation changes.

Call emergency services if numbness or weakness starts suddenly, especially on one side, or occurs with facial drooping, speech trouble, confusion, or new difficulty walking. Stroke and Transient Ischaemic Attack need urgent assessment even if symptoms improve.

Seek urgent help after serious injury or if the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, severely swollen, or impossible to move.
