Pins and needles in the extremities

A limb that tingles after pressure or an awkward position often improves with movement. A stocking-like sensation in the feet, or tingling that gradually involves hands and feet, can reflect Peripheral Neuropathy. Type 2 Diabetes, Vitamin B12 Deficiency, and Hypothyroidism are among the conditions a clinician may consider. Rapid breathing linked with Generalised Anxiety Disorder or Panic Disorder can also cause temporary tingling, but ongoing symptoms should not be attributed to anxiety without review.

Change position and move the affected area gently. Check numb feet and hands for unnoticed blisters, cuts, pressure marks, or burns, and choose supportive footwear. Record whether symptoms are constant, symmetrical, painful, or linked with walking, activity, or sleep. Book a primary-care appointment for persistent, recurrent, spreading, or painful tingling, or if balance or dexterity changes.

Seek emergency help for sudden weakness or numbness on one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, confusion, new vision changes, or severe difficulty walking. These can be signs of Stroke or a Transient Ischaemic Attack. Seek urgent care for rapidly worsening weakness, inability to stand, new bladder or bowel problems, or a limb that becomes unusually cold or changes colour.
