Pink vaginal discharge after sex: what to know

A small amount of blood can mix with normal vaginal fluid after friction, dryness, or contact with a sensitive cervix. Pink discharge can also occur with inflammation or an infection of the vagina or cervix. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea may present with unusual discharge or bleeding after sex, while pelvic inflammatory disease can cause pelvic pain and illness. The discharge itself cannot distinguish irritation from infection. Changes in smell, colour, texture, itching, burning when urinating, or pain during sex are useful details for a clinician. Pause sex until bleeding has stopped and you know whether an infection is involved. Do not douche or use scented products, because these can irritate delicate tissue. Arrange a sexual-health or gynaecology review if this happens again, follows a new partner, or comes with pelvic symptoms. Testing may involve a conversation, an examination, and samples; treatment depends on the cause. Partners may also need testing or treatment when a sexually transmitted infection is found.

Get urgent medical help for severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, faintness, heavy bleeding, or feeling acutely unwell. Seek prompt assessment if you may be pregnant and have bleeding with pain. A clinician should review persistent post-coital bleeding even when the amount is small, particularly if it occurs without obvious friction or dryness.

Ask whether you need infection testing, a cervical examination, pregnancy testing, or treatment; also ask when sex can safely resume and whether a partner should attend.
