Pink Spotting While Pregnant: What to Know

The colour may look pale pink, brownish, or red as bleeding changes. The amount, timing, pregnancy stage, and symptoms alongside it help a clinician decide what assessment is needed. Do not use colour alone to judge whether the bleeding is harmless.

Light spotting may occur after sex or an examination because the cervix becomes more sensitive during pregnancy. It can also occur around the time an early pregnancy is establishing, although spotting cannot confirm that everything is progressing normally.

Bleeding can also accompany problems that need prompt assessment, including pregnancy loss or a pregnancy developing outside the womb. Infection, including Chlamydia, may cause bleeding, particularly when there is unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain when passing urine. Bleeding between periods has other possible causes outside pregnancy, such as cervical changes, polyps, or fibroids.

A symptom does not identify its cause by itself. A clinician may ask about the bleeding and perform an examination or arrange testing based on your pregnancy stage and symptoms.

Contact your obstetrician, midwife, or maternity unit and describe when the spotting began, its colour, how much there is, and whether it is continuing. Mention your pregnancy stage, blood group if known, recent sex or examination, and any medicines.

Use a sanitary pad rather than a tampon so you can observe the amount. Avoid inserting anything into the vagina until a clinician advises you. Keep note of clots, tissue, cramps, fever, dizziness, or shoulder pain, and follow the assessment plan you are given.

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding becomes heavy, pain is severe or one-sided, you feel faint or very unwell, you develop shoulder-tip pain, fever, or pass clots or tissue. These symptoms can signal a complication that needs immediate assessment.

Do not wait for a routine appointment if spotting is accompanied by worsening cramps, pelvic pain, or weakness. If you cannot reach your maternity team, use local urgent services and tell them you are pregnant and bleeding.

Ask what might be causing the spotting, whether you need an examination or ultrasound, which symptoms should send you to urgent care, and whether you should change activity or avoid sex temporarily. Ask when and how to update the team if the bleeding continues.
