Pink eye and sore throat together

A virus can inflame the throat and the eye surface at the same time. This pattern can occur with a Common Cold, COVID-19 or Influenza. Conjunctivitis is not listed in this page's reading set, so focus on the symptoms: redness, watering or discharge in the eye alongside throat pain. Allergic Rhinitis can irritate the eyes and throat, while Strep Throat, Tonsillitis or Glandular Fever may need a clinical examination. Acid Reflux can irritate the throat but does not explain a new infectious-looking eye.

Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Wash hands frequently, avoid rubbing the eyes, and do not share towels, cups or cosmetics. Clean eye discharge gently with a clean damp pad. Stay away from close contact when fever or active respiratory symptoms are present, following local health advice. A clinician can decide whether testing or a targeted treatment is needed; do not start antibiotics left over from another illness.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, severe one-sided throat swelling, confusion, or a stiff neck. Prompt eye assessment is needed for significant pain, Light Sensitivity, reduced vision, injury or marked swelling. Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are worsening, fever persists, or the sore throat makes eating and drinking difficult. A combined symptom pattern should be assessed by severity, not by guessing one diagnosis from the other.
