Pink Bumps on Skin: Common Causes and Next Steps

Bumps around hairs, especially after sweating, shaving, or friction, may fit folliculitis. Tiny rough bumps on the upper arms or thighs can occur with keratosis pilaris. Heat rash tends to appear where sweat collects. Raised, intensely itchy areas that come and go may be hives, while firm, shiny, or scaly bumps need a closer examination. Lichen planus can produce distinctive itchy, flat-topped bumps, and milia are usually small, pale, keratin-filled cysts rather than inflamed pink lesions. Location, texture, itch, pain, scaling, and how long each bump lasts help narrow the possibilities.

Cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free product. Avoid scratching, squeezing, rough exfoliation, and newly introduced cosmetics. Keep sweaty skin cool and dry, wear breathable clothing, and use a bland moisturiser if the surface feels dry. Photograph changing areas in good light and note foods, medicines, products, heat, and insect exposure. Do not freeze, cut, or burn a bump at home. A clinician can decide whether observation, antihistamine treatment, cryotherapy, or another approach is appropriate.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or lips, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Get prompt assessment for fever, severe pain, warmth, pus, blistering, skin peeling, eye involvement, or a rapidly changing lesion. Book a dermatology visit for bumps that persist, bleed, ulcerate, repeatedly return, or do not have a clear trigger.
