Pineapple food poisoning: what to know

Short answer
Pineapple food poisoning can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain or fever; replace lost fluids and seek care for severe or persistent symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it may mean
Food poisoning follows eating food contaminated by germs or toxins. Pineapple may become contaminated during handling, cutting, storage or preparation. A sour taste or irritation from fresh fruit is not the same as food poisoning, although symptoms can overlap. Food poisoning commonly affects the digestive system, while fever can suggest an infection. One person becoming unwell after shared food does not prove which item caused it.
What to do now
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, especially after vomiting or loose stools. Rest, and return to simple foods when you feel able; avoid alcohol and foods that clearly worsen nausea. Wash your hands with soap and water and do not prepare food for others while you have diarrhoea or vomiting. Oral Rehydration Therapy can help replace water and salts. A clinician may consider IV Fluid Therapy when drinking is not enough.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if vomiting prevents drinking, diarrhoea continues, abdominal pain is severe, or fever is accompanied by marked weakness. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, very little urine, blood in vomit or stool, or signs of serious dehydration. Children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a long-term illness may need earlier assessment. Do not assume that a food trigger makes severe symptoms harmless.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit Food Poisoning, how to choose an Oral Rehydration Therapy product, and which warning signs matter for you. Mention when symptoms began, how much you can drink, any fever, and whether anyone else who ate the pineapple is ill.
