What should you know about pigeon fever in horses?

In horses, pigeon fever commonly describes a veterinary illness associated with abscesses, often around the chest or underside of the body. It is not a human diagnosis. A horse with swelling, draining pus, fever, reduced appetite, or low energy should be examined by a veterinarian rather than treated with leftover medicines.

People who handle an ill horse should avoid contact with drainage and contaminated bedding, wear suitable gloves, wash hands, and follow veterinary advice about cleaning. Animal exposure does not explain every human fever; respiratory illnesses, skin infections, and other causes remain possible.

Call a veterinarian for the horse and do not squeeze or open swellings yourself. Keep the horse’s equipment separate, clean surfaces as advised, and tell the veterinarian about other exposed animals. If you develop fever, a skin lesion, cough, or feel unwell after animal contact, contact a healthcare professional and describe the exposure.

Do not share antibiotics between animals and people. The correct treatment depends on the organism, site of infection, and examination findings.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, a rapidly spreading skin change, severe pain, or fast deterioration. Arrange prompt review for a persistent fever or a wound that becomes hot, swollen, painful, or drains fluid.

Tell your clinician what contact occurred, whether drainage touched broken skin, when symptoms began, and what protective measures were used. Ask whether examination or testing is needed and how to monitor the affected area.
