How spotting may appear

Spotting may look pink, red or brown and may appear on toilet paper or underwear rather than flow like a period. The colour can change as blood leaves the body, so an image is not a reliable way to judge whether a pregnancy is safe. Cervical sensitivity, infection, irritation after sex and changes inside the uterus are among the possibilities.

Bleeding in pregnancy is not the same as a diagnosis of cancer. Outside pregnancy, bleeding between periods can be associated with conditions such as [Cervical Dysplasia](/conditions/cervical-dysplasia/), [Chlamydia](/conditions/chlamydia/) or [Uterine Fibroids](/conditions/uterine-fibroids/), but only an examination can identify the cause.

What to do now

Note when the spotting started, its colour, whether it is increasing, and whether you have cramps, pain, dizziness, fever or unusual discharge. Use a pad if you need to monitor the amount and avoid inserting anything into the vagina until you have received clinical advice. Contact your maternity team and tell them how far along the pregnancy is, even if the spotting is light.

When bleeding is urgent

Seek emergency care for heavy or increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever or feeling very unwell. Do not wait for a photograph to become clearer. Bleeding with pain or weakness can require immediate assessment of both your health and the pregnancy.
