What should you know about pictures of hand foot and mouth on legs?

Hand, foot and mouth disease can cause spots or small blisters on the hands and feet, with lesions sometimes appearing on the legs, buttocks, or other areas. Mouth sores, fever, sore throat, reduced appetite, or tiredness provide context. A photograph alone cannot establish the diagnosis.

Atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, heat rash, scabies, ringworm, psoriasis, drug rash, and intertrigo can also affect the legs, but their patterns and management differ.

Note when the rash began, whether it is spreading, and whether fever, mouth sores, or itch are present. Wash hands often, avoid sharing cups and towels, and keep blisters clean. Do not scratch or apply a new medicated cream without advice. A child with a new widespread rash should be assessed by a clinician.

Seek urgent advice for breathing difficulty, severe drowsiness, dehydration, a stiff neck, severe headache, rapidly spreading purple or blistering skin, or a child who is difficult to wake. Arrange prompt review if fever persists, the rash becomes painful or infected, or mouth sores prevent drinking.
