Short answer

Photo therapy for skin can mean photodynamic therapy, in which a light-sensitive medicine is activated by controlled light to treat selected abnormal cells.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the treatment works

A clinician applies a light-sensitive medicine to the chosen area and allows it time to be absorbed. A specific light then activates the medicine, creating a reaction that damages targeted abnormal cells. It may be considered for some sun-related precancerous changes and selected skin cancers, including some Basal Cell Carcinoma cases. The exact medicine, light source, treatment area, and number of visits depend on the diagnosis and skin findings.

Preparing and caring for treated skin

Tell the treating team about medicines, allergies, pregnancy, immune problems, and any condition that makes light exposure unsafe. Follow the clinic’s instructions about washing, creams, and sun avoidance. During the photosensitive period after treatment, protect treated and exposed skin from daylight and strong indoor light as instructed; ordinary sunscreen alone may not provide enough protection. Redness, warmth, swelling, crusting, or tenderness can occur while skin heals. Do not pick crusts or add active products without guidance.

When to contact the clinic

Contact the treating clinic if pain is difficult to control, swelling spreads, the area develops worsening drainage, fever, or an unexpected reaction, or healing is not progressing as explained. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a severe allergic reaction. A new, changing, bleeding, or non-healing spot needs diagnostic review rather than cosmetic treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what diagnosis is being treated, why this light and medicine were selected, how long light precautions last, what healing should look like, and whether Topical 5-Fluorouracil or another option is suitable.

Questions people ask

Is photo therapy the same as a tanning treatment?

No. Medical photodynamic therapy uses a prescribed medicine and controlled light for a defined skin problem; tanning exposes skin without that treatment purpose.

Can it treat every skin spot?

No. A clinician must identify the lesion and decide whether photodynamic therapy fits its depth, type, and location.
