What should you know about photo onycholysis causes?

Onycholysis creates a gap beneath part or all of a nail, often appearing white, yellow, or opaque. The loose portion does not reattach to the nail bed; healthy nail must grow forward from the base. Repeated wet work, picking, manicures, tight footwear, and blows can contribute. Light-triggered reactions can also lift a nail, particularly when a medicine or chemical makes the skin or nail more sensitive to light.

Nail Fungus can cause thickening and debris under a lifting nail, while Nail Psoriasis may produce pits, colour changes, or separation. These causes can look alike, so photographs and an examination may not be enough; a clinician may test nail material.

Keep the nail short by trimming only the detached edge, and do not pull it off. Keep hands or feet dry after washing, wear protective gloves for wet work, and choose roomy shoes for affected toenails. Pause nail polish, glue, and salon procedures until the cause is clear. Tell your clinician about new medicines, occupational light exposure, injury, and any other nails involved.
