Phosphatidylcholine gallstones: what to know

Short answer
Phosphatidylcholine gallstones contain a fatty substance found in bile, and their significance depends on symptoms and complications.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main substance
- Phosphatidylcholine is a component of bile.
- Possible symptoms
- Upper abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea or vomiting.
What the term means
Bile is made by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Phosphatidylcholine is one of the substances that helps bile carry fats. Gallstones form when bile hardens into particles; a stone may contain cholesterol, pigments, phospholipids or a mixture. The exact label does not by itself predict pain or determine treatment.
Some stones remain in the gallbladder without causing trouble. Others irritate the gallbladder or move into a bile duct, causing upper abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea or vomiting. Gallstones can also contribute to pancreatitis when a stone blocks drainage near the pancreas.
What you can do
Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms recur, follow fatty meals, or disturb sleep. A clinician may ask where the pain is, how long it lasts, and whether fever, yellowing of the skin or dark urine has appeared. Assessment can include an examination and imaging such as an ultrasound.
Until assessed, note food triggers and avoid meals that reliably worsen symptoms. Do not start supplements or a restrictive diet to dissolve stones without medical advice. Treatment depends on whether stones are silent, causing repeated attacks, or blocking a duct.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever or chills, yellow skin or eyes, pale stools, or pain with marked weakness. These features can signal inflammation, a blocked bile duct or pancreatitis and need prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether imaging shows stones, sludge or inflammation; whether your symptoms fit gallstones; which foods or medicines may worsen symptoms; and what follow-up is needed if an attack returns.

Questions people ask
Do phosphatidylcholine gallstones always cause symptoms?
No. Stones may be found incidentally, while symptoms occur when the gallbladder or a duct becomes irritated or blocked.
Can diet remove these stones?
Diet may reduce triggers for some people, but it does not reliably remove established stones; discuss treatment with a clinician.
