What should you know about the PHI test for prostate cancer?

The Prostate Health Index combines total PSA, free PSA and a related PSA form into a calculated result. It is used with age, examination findings, symptoms, family history and previous test results to guide discussion about further assessment. A result does not confirm or exclude cancer. Benign prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection, recent procedures and other factors can affect PSA-related findings.

Ask why the test is being offered and how its result would change the next step. Your clinician may discuss repeating blood tests, examining the prostate, arranging an MRI or considering a biopsy. Difficulty passing urine should be assessed because it can arise from several prostate or urinary causes and does not by itself establish cancer. If cancer is diagnosed, treatment choices depend on its features and may include surgery or radiotherapy; some people may need additional therapies.

Arrange prompt medical review for blood in the urine or semen, persistent urinary difficulty, new bone pain, unexplained weight loss or worsening pelvic discomfort. Seek emergency care if you cannot pass urine, have severe lower abdominal pain, fever with urinary symptoms or sudden weakness. These symptoms need assessment whether or not a PHI test has been performed.
