PET scan for prostate cancer diagnosis

The tracer travels through the body and may collect more strongly in prostate cancer cells than in surrounding tissue. The images are interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings, prostate-specific blood tests, biopsy results, and earlier scans. A brighter area is not a diagnosis by itself: inflammation, healing, or normal activity can also affect tracer uptake.

The scan may help the team look at the prostate region, nearby lymph nodes, bones, or other areas. It can support staging, treatment planning, or assessment after treatment, depending on the tracer and the clinical question. A report should explain which findings are suspicious, uncertain, or reassuring.

Tell the imaging team about diabetes, medicines, allergies, recent procedures, and any possibility of pregnancy. Follow the centre’s instructions about eating, drinking, and arriving with identification or previous images. During the appointment, the tracer is given, a waiting period allows it to circulate, and you then lie still while images are taken.

Afterward, drink fluids if the team advises this and follow their instructions about routine activities. Arrange a consultation to review the written report rather than trying to interpret isolated images. Depending on the findings, the next discussion may involve biopsy information, active monitoring, surgery, radiotherapy, or another treatment pathway.

Contact the imaging service promptly if you develop marked swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives, or feel suddenly unwell after the injection. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing trouble, fainting, new leg weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These symptoms need assessment regardless of what the scan may show.

Ask which tracer was used, what area the scan was designed to assess, and whether the findings change the suspected stage. Ask how the result fits with your biopsy and blood tests, whether another test is needed, and when the report will be reviewed with you.
