What should you know about PET-CT scan for prostate cancer?

A PET-CT combines a tracer-based picture of activity with CT detail. In prostate cancer care, the selected tracer and the clinical question matter: the examination may help assess the prostate region, lymph nodes, bones, or other areas when spread or recurrence is being considered. It may also help the team choose where to focus treatment or whether additional testing is needed.

A scan finding does not replace the full assessment. Benign prostate changes, inflammation, healing, and normal tracer activity can alter images. Your specialist considers the result with prostate-specific antigen results, examination findings, previous imaging, biopsy information, and your treatment history.

Ask which tracer is planned and follow instructions about food, fluids, medicines, and exercise. Tell the team about diabetes, kidney problems, previous contrast reactions, pregnancy concerns, or difficulty passing urine. Bring relevant reports if requested. After the report is reviewed, your team may discuss observation, surgery, radiotherapy, systemic treatment, or treatment aimed at a particular site; the scan is one part of that decision.

Seek urgent medical help for inability to pass urine, severe back pain with leg weakness or numbness, loss of bowel control, breathing difficulty, fainting, or facial or throat swelling after an injection. Contact your care team promptly for new or worsening bone pain, blood in the urine, fever, or rapidly changing urinary symptoms. These symptoms need assessment regardless of what a scan may show.

Ask what the scan is intended to answer, which tracer is being used, whether it will alter staging or treatment, how urinary symptoms affect preparation, and when the result will be reviewed with you.
