Bleeding can happen as the early placenta and surrounding tissues attach and change. It may settle without treatment, but bleeding in early pregnancy can also occur with miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy. Assessment may include questions about the bleeding, pelvic pain, dizziness, and your pregnancy history. A scan may be repeated to check the pregnancy and the area of bleeding. Blood tests may also help clarify pregnancy development when the scan is too early to answer every question.

Contact your maternity team or a qualified clinician promptly to report bleeding, even if it is light. Note when it began, whether it is pink, brown, or red, how much you are seeing, and whether clots or tissue are present. Use pads rather than tampons so the amount is easier to observe. Follow the plan for repeat scans or blood tests, and take medicines only after checking that they are suitable in pregnancy.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, or bleeding that is rapidly soaking pads. Fever, feeling very unwell, or passing substantial tissue also needs prompt assessment. Do not wait for a scheduled appointment if these symptoms appear, because pain and circulation symptoms can signal a complication that requires immediate care.
