Period over but still spotting: what it can mean

Spotting is light bleeding outside the expected flow of a period. It may reflect hormonal changes, irritation of the cervix, an infection such as Chlamydia, or a growth such as an endometrial polyp or fibroid. Less commonly, changes in the cervix or womb lining need investigation. The symptom alone does not identify the cause.

Note when the spotting starts, its colour and amount, whether it follows sex, and whether you have cramps, unusual discharge, fever, or bleeding after menopause. This record helps a clinician decide whether an examination, pregnancy test, infection testing, or imaging is appropriate.

Use a liner if helpful and keep a simple bleeding diary. Avoid vaginal products that irritate you, and do not start leftover antibiotics or hormonal medicine without advice. If pregnancy is possible, mention that when booking care because it changes the assessment.

Book a routine appointment if the spotting returns, lasts beyond the end of your period, happens after sex, or is a new pattern for you.
