What should you know about period hives?

A repeating pattern can be useful: note when the welts begin, when bleeding starts, how long they last, and whether they return in the same phase of the cycle. Hormonal changes may be one factor, but heat, pressure from clothing, stress, medicines, infections, or a food trigger can also cause hives. The timing alone does not prove that hormones are the cause.

Individual welts often come and go while new ones appear elsewhere. Itching is common, and deeper swelling can affect the eyelids, lips, hands, or feet; this is called angioedema. A rash that stays fixed in one place, bruises, blisters, or leaves marks deserves a medical assessment because it may not be ordinary hives.

Keep a short symptom diary with cycle dates, medicines, supplements, foods, exercise, heat exposure, and photographs of the skin. Use cool compresses, loose clothing, and fragrance-free products, and try not to scratch. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether an oral antihistamine treatment is suitable for you and how to use it safely.

Arrange a dermatology or primary-care review if episodes keep returning, interfere with sleep, or do not settle with basic measures. Bring the diary and a list of every medicine, including pain relievers and hormonal products. Do not stop prescribed treatment or alter contraception without discussing it with the prescriber.

Get emergency help immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, wheezing, severe dizziness, fainting, or a rapidly worsening reaction. These symptoms can signal a serious allergic reaction, even if the skin changes seem mild.

Seek prompt medical advice for widespread swelling, repeated episodes, fever, painful lesions, skin that bruises, or symptoms involving the eyes or mouth. Urgency is guided by these warning signs, not by the fact that the hives occur around a period.
