Period Done but Still Spotting: What to Know

Light pink, red, or brown discharge can appear when a small amount of blood leaves the uterus or cervix after menstrual flow has ended. Hormonal shifts, starting or changing hormonal contraception, missed contraception, and irritation after sex can all contribute. Spotting can also occur with an infection such as Chlamydia, especially when there is pelvic pain, unusual discharge, pain during sex, or burning when urinating.

Bleeding between periods is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Growths such as Endometrial Polyps or Uterine Fibroids may contribute, and changes in the cervix or womb sometimes need evaluation. A cervical cancer diagnosis is not implied by spotting; the symptom has many possible causes, but persistent or recurrent bleeding should be assessed.

Record when the spotting starts and stops, its colour and amount, whether it follows sex, and any pain or discharge. Note contraception changes, missed doses, pregnancy possibility, and the date of your last cervical screening. Use a pad or liner if useful so you can observe the pattern, and avoid douching or inserting products that may irritate the vagina.

Arrange a clinician appointment if spotting returns, continues, happens after sex, or is new for you. Assessment may include questions about your cycle and medicines, a pregnancy test when relevant, infection testing, and an examination. Further tests depend on your age, symptoms, examination findings, and screening history.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or feeling very unwell. If pregnancy is possible, bleeding with one-sided pain, dizziness, or fainting needs prompt assessment because an ectopic pregnancy can be serious. Contact a clinician promptly for bleeding after menopause or spotting with persistent pelvic symptoms.
