What should you know about period after molar pregnancy?

A molar pregnancy causes an abnormal pregnancy-related tissue change and can leave pregnancy hormone levels detectable after treatment. Until the levels fall and the menstrual cycle resumes, bleeding may be irregular, lighter, heavier, or absent. Bleeding alone cannot show whether follow-up is complete. The care team usually tracks hormone levels and symptoms, because a persistent or rising level can need additional evaluation. A new pregnancy can also make hormone results difficult to interpret, so follow the contraception advice given by your specialist.

Attend every planned hormone test and report bleeding that is new, prolonged, unusually heavy, or associated with pain. Record when bleeding starts, how it changes, and whether you have dizziness or clots. Do not assume that the first period means monitoring can stop. Your specialist will tell you when pregnancy is medically appropriate and which contraception is suitable during monitoring. If treatment with chemotherapy was needed, ask how it affects cycle recovery and future pregnancy planning.

Contact your care team promptly for heavy bleeding, worsening pelvic or abdominal pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, marked dizziness, or bleeding that continues longer than expected. Emergency help is needed if you faint, feel severely weak, have severe pain, or cannot keep fluids down. These symptoms need assessment whether or not a period has returned.
