Period 3 Years After Menopause: What to Know

After menopause, vaginal bleeding can come from thinning or irritation of the vaginal or uterine lining, polyps, or other conditions. Hormone treatment and some medicines can also cause bleeding. Less commonly, bleeding can signal a serious problem affecting the womb, so the symptom should not be explained away as menopause returning.

Menopause is defined by the absence of periods, while hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood changes, and low sex drive may continue or change over time. Pelvic organ prolapse can cause pressure or spotting but still needs an examination when bleeding occurs.

Arrange an appointment with a gynaecologist or primary-care clinician and record when the bleeding began, how much there was, and whether it followed sex. Mention medicines, hormone therapy, pelvic symptoms, and any pain. Do not wait for another episode before arranging assessment. The clinician may examine the vagina and cervix and decide whether imaging or a sample is needed.

Seek urgent help if bleeding is heavy or persistent, or if it comes with severe pelvic pain, dizziness, fainting, weakness, fever, or shortness of breath. Emergency symptoms can reflect significant blood loss or another acute problem and should not be managed by monitoring at home.

Ask what may be causing the bleeding, which examination or tests are appropriate, whether your medicines could contribute, and how quickly results and follow-up should happen.
