What should you know about perineurioma immunohistochemistry?

A pathologist studies tissue under a microscope and applies selected antibodies that attach to proteins in the cells. The resulting staining pattern is interpreted with the tumour’s architecture, cell appearance, site, and clinical information. In a suspected perineurioma, the pattern may support perineurial differentiation, while other markers help separate it from nerve-sheath, muscle, fibrous, or other soft-tissue tumours. No single stain is interpreted in isolation, and a report may use terms such as positive, negative, focal, or diffuse to describe the findings.

The sample usually comes from a biopsy or an operation. Ask whether the specimen was adequate, which markers were used, and whether the diagnosis is firm or needs additional review. If the lesion is small and localised, management may focus on its symptoms, position, growth, and whether complete removal is practical.
