Short answer

Antibiotics for periductal mastitis may treat suspected bacterial infection, but a clinician must assess the breast and choose the medicine.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What periductal mastitis involves

Periductal mastitis affects ducts beneath or near the nipple and can cause tenderness, redness, swelling, nipple discharge or a lump behind the nipple. Infection is one possible contributor, but inflammation can persist or recur, and not every breast lump responds to antibiotics. A clinician may check for an abscess, which is a collection of pus that can require drainage. Other breast problems can resemble mastitis, so improvement and examination matter more than assuming the cause from symptoms alone.

Using treatment safely

Take antibiotics exactly as prescribed and tell the prescriber about medicine allergies, pregnancy, breastfeeding and other medicines. Do not use leftover tablets or share them. Gentle support, suitable pain relief and warm or cool compresses may help if your clinician says they are appropriate. Avoid squeezing the nipple or lump. If symptoms are not settling, return for review; the clinician may arrange imaging, a sample of discharge, drainage or another treatment. Antibiotics used for other infections, such as Cellulitis, are not automatically suitable for breast symptoms.

When to seek care quickly

Seek same-day assessment for a rapidly enlarging painful lump, spreading redness, fever, chills, pus-like discharge or feeling unwell. An abscess may need prompt drainage rather than antibiotics alone. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or collapse after taking a medicine. Arrange follow-up if symptoms recur, discharge is bloody, or a lump remains after inflammation improves.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether infection or an abscess is suspected, how long to take the prescribed medicine, and when improvement should be checked. Ask whether imaging or a breast specialist review is needed if the lump or discharge continues.

Questions people ask

Will antibiotics always clear periductal mastitis?

No. Inflammation may recur, and an abscess or another breast condition may need drainage, imaging or different treatment.

Can I use someone else's antibiotics?

No. The medicine and dose may be unsuitable, delay assessment or cause side effects. Use antibiotics only when prescribed for you.
