The solution is placed on selected skin after an assessment of your complexion, current products, and medical history. Ingredients can vary by formulation, and the strength and contact time should be chosen by a trained professional. You may feel warmth, tingling, tightness, or stinging during and shortly after application. Peeling can begin later, with dryness or flaking that reveals fresher-looking skin beneath. Results depend on the concern being treated and how your skin responds.

Chemical peels may be considered for acne, comedonal acne, sun spots, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and sun-damaged skin. They can also be used for rough follicular bumps such as keratosis pilaris, but the area and formulation matter. A peel is not a way to diagnose a changing mole or unexplained pigment.
