What should you know about penicillin allergy foods to avoid?

A reaction after penicillin may have been an allergy, a medicine side effect, or an illness symptom that happened at the same time. Allergy symptoms can include hives, swelling, wheezing, vomiting or faintness. An itchy throat can be an early warning sign, but it can also have other causes. Food allergies are separate from penicillin allergy, although a person can have both.

Tell every doctor, dentist and pharmacist exactly what happened, when it happened, which medicine was taken and whether urgent treatment was needed. Do not test yourself by taking penicillin or eating a food you believe contains it.

Check medicine names with a pharmacist before taking antibiotics, including combination products. Keep the allergy information visible in your medical record and carry an updated medicine list. Ask whether Allergy Testing or a supervised assessment could clarify an uncertain label; testing is selected according to the reaction history and is not suitable to perform at home.

You do not need to remove ordinary foods solely because you have a penicillin allergy. If a particular food repeatedly causes symptoms, record the food, amount, timing and symptoms and discuss it as a possible Food Allergy.

After any medicine or food exposure, call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, widespread hives with dizziness, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Anaphylaxis needs immediate treatment; follow your personal emergency plan if one has been prescribed.
