Short answer

Peeling skin from sunburn happens when injured outer cells shed during repair; cool and moisturise the area gently, prevent more exposure, and watch for severe symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Why it happens
Damaged outer skin sheds while the surface repairs.
Safer approach
Cool, moisturise, cover, and leave attached flakes alone.
Seek advice
Get help for blistering, fever, worsening pain, or whole-body symptoms.

Understanding the change

Peeling can appear after the initial heat, redness, soreness, or itch of a burn. The flakes are part of the damaged outer layer, while newer skin forms underneath. Removing them cannot speed healing and may leave tender skin exposed. The amount of peeling does not reliably show how deep the injury is. Blisters, intense pain, swelling, or symptoms such as dizziness and vomiting point to a need for medical advice. If scaling appears without recent sun exposure, consider other causes such as psoriasis or athlete's foot rather than assuming sunburn.

Comfort and protection

Leave the sun and cover the area with loose, soft clothing. Use a cool damp cloth or cool bath, avoiding ice and very hot water. While the skin is damp, apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser. Keep hydrated and avoid rubbing, shaving over the area, exfoliating, or peeling attached skin. Protect the recovering area from sunlight with clothing and shade. Do not break blisters. If you need pain relief, check that the medicine is suitable with your health conditions and other medicines, and follow its directions.

Warning signs

Contact a healthcare professional for extensive blistering, worsening tenderness, increasing redness, pus, fever, or swelling near the eyes. Seek urgent care for fainting, confusion, repeated vomiting, severe headache, or inability to drink enough fluids. Book an assessment for peeling that does not settle, repeatedly returns, or develops on an area that was not sun-exposed. Avoid prescription creams unless a clinician has examined the skin and advised their use.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the burn is superficial or needs treatment, how to care for any blisters, and which products will protect the healing surface. Ask what level of pain, redness, or swelling should prompt a same-day review.

Questions people ask

Does peeling mean a sunburn is healing?

It can occur during repair, but peeling alone does not confirm that the burn is fully settled or show its severity.

What should you put on peeling sunburn?

A bland, fragrance-free moisturiser may soothe intact skin after cooling; avoid products that sting and seek advice for blisters or open skin.
