Short answer

Peeling skin after sunburn is the shedding of damaged surface cells as the skin repairs itself; use gentle care, avoid further sun, and get help for severe symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical change
Redness and soreness may be followed by dryness and flaking.
Gentle care
Cool the skin, moisturise, and avoid scrubbing or picking.
Protection
Keep peeling skin out of direct sunlight.

What the peeling means

A sunburn may first cause warmth, redness, soreness, or itching. Later, the outer layer can become dry and shed in flakes or larger thin pieces. Peeling alone is not a reliable measure of burn severity. Blisters, severe tenderness, extensive swelling, or symptoms affecting the whole body need more attention. Dry scaling that began without a recent burn may instead fit another cause, such as psoriasis or athlete's foot when the feet are involved.

Steps that may help

Move out of direct sunlight and keep the affected skin covered with loose clothing. Cool it with a damp cloth or a cool bath, never by placing ice directly on the skin. Apply a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp. Drink fluids, avoid hot showers, and do not scrub, exfoliate, or pull away attached skin. Leave blisters intact and avoid products containing ingredients that sting. If pain relief is appropriate for you, follow the label and consider your medical conditions and other medicines.

When to seek medical care

Seek prompt medical advice for large or numerous blisters, worsening pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, or swelling around the eyes. Urgent care is needed for confusion, fainting, repeated vomiting, severe headache, or difficulty drinking after sun exposure. Arrange a dermatology review when peeling lasts beyond the expected healing period, keeps returning, or affects skin that was not exposed to the sun. Do not use prescription creams on a burn without guidance.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the burn needs examination, which moisturiser is suitable for your skin, and how to manage blisters safely. You might also ask how to cover the area outdoors and whether persistent scaling suggests another condition.

Questions people ask

Should you remove peeling skin after sunburn?

No. Allow it to come away on its own; pulling at it can irritate the skin and expose tender areas.

When is sunburn peeling more concerning?

Blistering, increasing pain, spreading redness, fever, eye swelling, or whole-body symptoms warrant medical advice.
