Pediatric otoscope: what parents should know

The clinician chooses a soft, suitable-sized tip and gently looks for redness, swelling, trapped fluid, wax, discharge, or a change in the eardrum. The examination may help explain ear pain, fever, pulling at the ear, balance concerns, or changes in hearing. A clear-looking ear does not explain every cause of discomfort, so the history and wider examination still matter. Never share an ear device or place objects into a child’s ear at home.

Bring details about when symptoms began, recent colds, sleep disruption, discharge, hearing changes, and any medicine given. Hold a young child securely if the clinician asks, and use calm explanations rather than forcing the ear examination. A Child Health Consultation can assess ear symptoms alongside general wellbeing; a GP Consultation may also be appropriate when symptoms are mild but persistent. Follow advice about drops or treatment instead of self-cleaning the canal.

Seek prompt medical care for swelling or redness behind the ear, a new facial weakness, severe pain, blood or pus from the ear, sudden hearing loss, marked dizziness, or a child who is unusually drowsy or very unwell. Fever with a stiff neck, breathing difficulty, or difficulty waking needs emergency attention.

Ask what was seen, whether the eardrum could be viewed clearly, what may be causing the symptoms, how to manage pain, and when hearing or symptom review is needed.
