What should you know about peanut allergy skin rash?

An allergic rash often consists of itchy, raised welts that appear after exposure and may move or fade while new areas appear. Swelling of the lips, eyelids, tongue, or throat can occur alongside skin symptoms. A flat, scaly, ring-shaped, cracked, or persistently localised rash may point to another cause.

Atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, heat rash, intertrigo, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, and a drug rash can all produce redness or itch for different reasons. The rash does not prove which trigger is responsible, and a peanut allergy cannot be confirmed by appearance alone.

Stop the suspected exposure, photograph the rash if it changes quickly, and note what was eaten or touched, when symptoms began, and whether breathing or stomach symptoms occurred. Keep ingredient packaging available for the clinician.

Follow an existing allergy action plan. Arrange medical assessment before reintroducing a suspected food. Until you have advice, avoid deliberate home testing and take care with shared utensils, surfaces, and products that may contain the ingredient.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. A rash with symptoms in another body system can be an emergency even when the skin findings seem mild.
