PCOS spotting between periods: what to know

PCOS is associated with irregular or absent ovulation. When ovulation does not happen regularly, hormone changes may make periods unpredictable, with light bleeding or brown discharge appearing between expected periods. Spotting can also happen when a period is starting or ending.

PCOS is not the only possible explanation. Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, or bleeding during a possible or confirmed pregnancy. Fever with pelvic pain or unusual discharge also needs prompt assessment because infection may require treatment.
