Short answer

Patellar osteomyelitis is a bone infection of the kneecap that needs prompt medical assessment and targeted treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Patellar osteomyelitis is a bone infection of the kneecap that needs prompt medical assessment and targeted treatment. It can develop when bacteria reach bone through the bloodstream, a nearby wound, or an operation. Knee pain, warmth, swelling, tenderness, reduced movement, fever, or feeling unwell can occur, although symptoms vary.

What patellar osteomyelitis means

The patella is the small bone at the front of the knee. Infection there can irritate the bone and surrounding tissues, making bending or straightening painful. A clinician may examine the skin and knee, ask about recent injury or surgery, and order blood tests or imaging. If infection needs confirmation, a sample from the affected area may help identify the organism and guide antibiotics.

Treatment depends on the depth and cause of infection. Antibiotics are commonly needed, sometimes through a vein at first. If infected or damaged tissue cannot settle with medicine alone, a surgical clean-out may be considered. Bone Grafting may be discussed when a procedure leaves a bone defect or when reconstruction is needed.

What to do while being assessed

Arrange prompt medical review for new knee swelling, warmth, persistent pain, drainage, or fever, particularly after a wound or procedure. Keep any dressing clean and follow prescribed medicine instructions. Avoid strenuous kneeling, running, or self-directed exercises until the knee has been examined. Do not stop antibiotics early unless the treating clinician changes the plan.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent care for rapidly worsening pain or swelling, spreading redness, pus from a wound, high fever, confusion, faintness, or difficulty bearing weight. A red, hot knee with severe pain and a generally unwell feeling can signal a deeper infection. Emergency assessment is also appropriate if you cannot move the knee safely or symptoms worsen quickly.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which findings support infection, whether imaging or a tissue sample is needed, how long treatment may take, and what activity is safe. You can also ask how the knee will be monitored, what side effects to watch for, and when a surgical opinion or Bone Grafting discussion becomes relevant.

Questions people ask

Can patellar osteomyelitis happen after an injury?

Yes. An open wound, procedure, or nearby infection can provide a route for bacteria to reach the patella, so new symptoms after injury need assessment.

Is knee pain alone enough to diagnose it?

No. Knee pain has several possible causes. A clinician combines the examination with tests and imaging, and may use a sample to guide treatment.
