Short answer

A partial TFCC tear is an injury to part of the cartilage and supporting tissue on the little-finger side of the wrist; treatment depends on stability, symptoms and activity needs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a partial TFCC tear means

The triangular fibrocartilage complex helps cushion the wrist and support the joint between the two forearm bones. A partial injury may cause pain on the little-finger side, clicking, reduced grip or discomfort when turning a key, opening a jar or leaning on the hand. An examination can assess tenderness, movement and wrist stability; imaging may be used when the diagnosis or extent of injury is uncertain.

A stable tear may settle with protection and rehabilitation. Ongoing instability, mechanical catching or symptoms that limit daily tasks can change the treatment discussion.

What you can do next

Reduce movements that reproduce pain, especially forceful twisting, heavy gripping and weight-bearing through the wrist. A clinician may recommend a period of Splinting to limit motion while the tissues calm. Physiotherapy can then address wrist movement, forearm strength and a gradual return to loading. In selected cases, a Cortisone Injection may be discussed for pain and inflammation, but it does not repair a torn structure. Keep a note of which activities trigger symptoms and whether grip or rotation is improving.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if wrist pain persists after an injury, grip becomes weaker, or clicking and movement restriction interfere with work or self-care. Seek prompt care after a major injury if the wrist looks deformed, the hand becomes numb or unusually cold, or you cannot move the fingers normally. Sudden worsening swelling or severe pain also warrants timely evaluation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the tear appears stable, which activities should be paused, how long protection is appropriate, and what milestones will guide rehabilitation. You can also ask when imaging or a surgical opinion would be considered if symptoms continue.
